ABOUT THE SERVICES SITES

L’Arche Tahoma Hope Farm & Gardens

The Mission of L’Arche is to make known the gifts of people with intellectual disabilities, revealed through mutually transforming relationships; to foster an environment in community that responds to the changing needs of their members, while being faithful to the core values of their founding story; and to engage in diverse cultures, working together toward a more human society.

When you come to volunteer at L’Arche Farm & Gardens, please come prepared for your safety and comfort by doing the following:

  • Wear closed-toed shoes and dress in layers

  • Bring sunscreen, a hat, and a reusable water bottle

  • Bring a mask, in case you are working in close quarters or in a greenhouse

  • Gardening gloves (optional)

  • Bee sting medication (optional)

L’Arche Tahoma Hope Farm & Gardens will offer a range of tasks for many abilities. However, please be aware that farming is physical work, mostly outdoors in all kinds of weather, and it may require standing, squatting, bending, and lifting. Please be open to tasks that depend on the season and the needs of the day. L’Arche will do their best to orient volunteers and to explain the tasks at hand and would be glad to answer questions when you need more information. They will provide all the tools you might need. To learn more about L’Arche culture and values while working on the farm, please visit here.

This site will host 20 volunteers. Adults and teens 13+ are welcome.

St. Leo Food Connection

Food Connection is a ministry of St. Leo Catholic Parish and has been serving residents of Pierce County since 1982. Begun as a small, neighborhood food pantry, their programs rapidly expanded to become some of the largest emergency food assistance programs in the area. The Food Connection mission and belief is that God, out of love for us, has created a world in which there is enough food for everyone, if only we are willing to share.

Volunteers will have an opportunity to serve their neighbors directly through greeting and guiding clients through the food bank as Food Line Assistants; assistants will take tickets given to clients and provide guidance to each client during the selection of the appropriate amounts of food allotted to them dependent on their family size.

Please be mindful of the following:

  • Assistants must not wear tank tops. Short sleeve shirts are allowed.

  • Assistants must wear closed-toe shoes at all times. No flip flops.

  • Shorts are permitted. Please wear shorts that are mid-thigh length or longer.

  • Since assistants are a representative of Food Connection to the public, assistants may not wear items of clothing on which are written words or sayings that others may find offensive.

  • Assistants are encouraged to dress in layers due to temperature variabilities on location.
